Residential Windows April 2026

How to Choose Replacement Windows for a West Michigan Winter

West Michigan winters test everything — including your windows. If you're seeing condensation between panes, feeling drafts near frames, or watching your heating bill climb every January, it's likely time for replacement windows.

At Reed City Glass, we've been installing windows across Osceola and Mecosta County since 1972. Here's what we look for when helping homeowners choose the right replacement.

Michigan qualifies for Energy Star's Northern climate zone — the most demanding tier. Look for windows with a U-factor of 0.27 or lower and a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) suited to your home's orientation. Lower U-factors mean better insulation.

Wood frames can warp and rot in Michigan's freeze-thaw cycles. Fiberglass is excellent but expensive. Vinyl replacement windows — like the Polar Seal and Provia lines we carry — offer the best balance of durability, insulation, and value for most West Michigan homes.

Triple-pane windows offer better thermal performance and noise reduction, which matters if you're near US-10 or a busy road. For most Reed City area homes, high-quality double-pane with low-E coating and argon gas fill is the sweet spot between performance and cost.

The best window installed poorly will still leak air. Our crews take precise measurements, properly flash and seal every opening, and verify every window operates correctly before leaving the job. Workmanship is backed by our warranty.
